Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut *The Chronology of Water* has secured UK and Ireland distribution rights through BFI Distribution following its acclaimed festival run that began with a premiere in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section. Stewart expressed gratitude for the BFI’s support of independent cinema, coinciding with the film’s upcoming sold-out screenings in the Dare section of the BFI Film Festival this October. The adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir follows a woman’s journey through trauma, competitive swimming, and self-discovery, featuring Imogen Poots in what critics are calling a revelatory performance alongside a strong supporting cast.
The film has generated significant international interest, with distribution deals secured across multiple territories including Benelux (O’Brother), Germany and Austria (Eksystent), Spain (Sideral), Italy (Wanted), and various other European markets. Beyond Europe, the film will reach audiences in Brazil through Grupo Estação, South Korea via Pancinema, Indonesia through PT Falcon, and other territories. The US release will be handled by The Forge while French distribution remains with Les Films du Losange, who are handling international sales.
*The Chronology of Water* has already begun accumulating awards, winning the Revelation Prize at the Deauville American Film Festival and the Grand Prix at Cinefest in Hungary. The film’s festival journey continues with selections at numerous international events including New Horizons in Poland, Melbourne International Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival, and several other prominent cinema events across Europe and Asia.
The production brings together an impressive roster of producers including Charles Gillibert of CG Cinema International, Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions, and Stewart’s own Nevermind Pictures alongside several other production companies. This collaborative effort behind Stewart’s first feature film demonstrates the industry confidence in her transition to directing, with BFI’s Head of Acquisitions Laura Dos Santos praising the film as „a powerfully unapologetic, courageous film” that serves as „a rallying battle cry for our audiences.”
