Apple Delays Siri AI Launch in EU Over Privacy Concerns

Apple has announced Siri AI, a next-generation version of Siri powered by its advanced Apple Intelligence system. However, due to compliance issues with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), the company will not be able to release Siri AI on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 in the EU. Apple states that EU regulators rejected all of its proposed solutions to safely integrate the new AI features while supporting third-party virtual assistants. Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, expressed disappointment, noting that the company’s efforts to protect user privacy and security were not accepted, and no timeline for EU availability currently exists.

When iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 launch later this year, EU users will miss out on Siri AI’s advanced capabilities, including a dedicated app for revisiting conversations, an expanded Visual Intelligence experience, integrated writing tools, Siri mode in Camera, and more. Additionally, because Siri AI on watchOS 27 requires a paired iPhone with Siri AI, EU users will also lose access on their Apple Watches. However, Siri AI will be available on macOS 27 and visionOS 27 in the EU. Developers in the region will not be able to test or use the new Siri AI features on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, or watchOS 27.

Apple emphasizes that Siri AI is designed with privacy at its core, relying on on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute to keep user data secure. The company argues that the DMA’s interpretation by EU regulators would force Apple to grant any virtual assistant unrestricted access to users’ private data and the ability to control other apps without adequate protections. This, Apple warns, could lead to serious security risks, such as data theft or unauthorized changes to files and settings. Security researchers have highlighted that AI systems can be hijacked for malicious purposes, and as AI capabilities grow, these risks escalate.

To address these concerns, Apple proposed a solution called Trusted System Agent, an intermediary that would allow virtual assistants to safely access the same features as Siri AI in the EU, along with a gradual 18-month rollout plan. The European Commission rejected this and all other Apple proposals. Apple remains committed to bringing Siri AI to the EU safely but cannot provide a timeline for its availability on iOS and iPadOS due to the regulators’ refusal to acknowledge the security risks.
