Max Oseredchuk, a 30-year-old former ABC News producer and driver, was killed in a Russian drone strike on Wednesday night while serving in Ukraine’s military. Born on Nov. 4, 1995, in Vuhledar, a city in the Donetsk region that has been almost entirely destroyed and occupied by Russia since early 2023, Max is survived by his wife, Kateryna, and their 9-month-old daughter, Maria. Following the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022, Max began working with ABC News from Kyiv, following in the footsteps of his father, Sasha, who also serves as a driver for international media.
Max quickly became a beloved and integral part of the ABC News team, reporting from the frontlines of one of the most devastating wars in modern history. His deep knowledge of the roads, especially in the most dangerous parts of eastern Ukraine, combined with his sense of humor, calm demeanor, and dry wit, made him essential for successful assignments. He drove countless ABC News teams across Ukraine, keeping them safe in extremely challenging environments, and believed deeply in the journalistic mission of telling stories from the hardest-to-reach parts of his country still under attack.
After leaving ABC News, Max worked for the New York Times as a driver and fixer, often in hazardous frontline areas. Several months ago, he was drafted into Ukraine’s military and assigned to the 34th Marine Brigade. At the time, he told an ABC colleague, „if this is what fate has brought, I will defend my country and my daughter.” Despite the difficult circumstances, he stayed in contact with his ABC News colleagues, sharing stories and checking on friends with kindness and his characteristic humor. Max Oseredchuk will be mourned by all at ABC News as a beloved colleague, husband, father, and friend.
