Uber Hiring Slows as AI Reshapes Tech Workforce and Visa Rules Tighten

Uber continues to actively hire for hundreds of positions globally, even as the broader tech industry becomes more cautious due to the rise of artificial intelligence and tightening work visa restrictions. The ride-hailing giant has several hundred open roles worldwide, including a few hundred in the United States. However, like many Big Tech companies, Uber has slowed hiring in certain areas in response to AI’s growing influence—CEO Dara Khosrowshahi noted earlier this year that employees are generally expected to be more productive. Additionally, recent changes to the H-1B visa program, including a significant fee hike introduced by the Trump administration, have led many tech firms to reduce their reliance on foreign talent.

The company’s latest visa filings offer a detailed snapshot of its hiring strategy and compensation for foreign workers. During the first half of the 2026 federal fiscal year, Uber filed applications to hire 364 workers through the H-1B visa program, a notable decline from the 497 filings made during the same period the previous year. Many of these applications target software engineers and other roles impacted by AI. The highest salary among the disclosed positions reached $410,000, while the lowest base pay was $94,331. Uber, which ended 2025 with approximately 34,000 employees globally, did not comment on the filings, but the data sheds light on how the company is balancing its hiring needs amid shifting immigration and technological landscapes.

A detailed breakdown of the high-paying roles Uber disclosed reveals substantial compensation across engineering, data science, product management, and other tech functions. For example, software engineering managers can earn up to $410,000, while senior directors of engineering also top out at that figure. Senior software engineers earn between $193,253 and $239,300, while data scientists can earn up to $193,700. Product managers see salaries ranging from $166,400 to $260,000 for lead roles. Other high-value positions include machine learning engineers, who can earn up to $297,000, and strategy and finance managers who make as much as $250,000. These figures underscore Uber’s willingness to pay top dollar for specialized talent even as it adjusts its hiring volumes in response to AI and regulatory changes.
