Mistral AI has unveiled its new flagship model, Mistral Large 4, entering a crowded market just after releases from Anthropic (Claude Opus 5.5) and OpenAI (GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna). The French company, known for its open-source and open-weight LLMs, claims the model—affectionately nicknamed „le Chonk”—ranks among the best open-weight models in the world on aggregated metrics, outperforming European and US competitors while closing the gap with Chinese models that have dominated the open-weight sector. A public preview is available now, with full rollout planned for October 27.
According to Chief Scientist Guillaume Lample and VP of Science Pierre Stock, Mistral Large 4 was built to process both text and images, closing performance gaps from earlier Mistral models. The model emphasizes advanced cybersecurity capabilities—covering defensive tasks like log inspection, code auditing, and vulnerability detection, as well as offensive measures to identify weaknesses—alongside strong agentic performance for planning, research, and complex enterprise tasks. Mistral says the model achieves state-of-the-art results on key agentic benchmarks such as SWE-bench and Terminal Bench, which test how well AI agents handle coding and analysis workflows that would take human experts hours or days.
The model also stands out for geospatial and grounding capabilities. Mistral says it outperforms competitors, including closed models, in analyzing aerial and satellite imagery—identifying visual patterns such as forest fires on maps—and excels at grounding, a technique that anchors AI outputs in external documents and databases to reduce hallucinations and keep information current. Additionally, Mistral Large 4 was trained on more than 160 languages, including every official EU language plus Latin and non-Latin languages, enabling native-language responses.
The public preview period serves a dual purpose: gathering feedback from developers, cybersecurity experts, and state officials while the team conducts additional reinforcement learning and fine-tuning ahead of the October 27 launch. Developers can try the preview API now, making Mistral Large 4 a notable entry in the rapidly accelerating race among global AI labs—particularly as an open-weight alternative emphasizing compute efficiency and specialized enterprise capabilities.
