The CEE Animation Forum, Eastern Europe’s premier platform for ambitious animated projects, has announced the selection of 33 titles for its 14th edition, scheduled for November 10-12 in Pilsen, Czech Republic. Chosen from over 160 submissions, the lineup includes seven feature films, 10 series and TV specials, 10 short films, and six student short films. Central and Eastern European projects make up roughly two-thirds of the selection, with Czechia and France leading at seven projects each, followed by Poland (five), Hungary (four), and Bulgaria (three). Notably, more than half of the projects target young adult and adult audiences, and hand-drawn animation remains the dominant technique.
A significant addition this year is the new Council of Europe Series Co-Production Development Award, worth €50,000, highlighting the growing importance of animated series and TV specials at the event. Overall, projects will compete for over €50,000 in cash and industry awards while seeking financing and co-production partners. The diverse slate features projects from countries like Spain, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Romania, Belgium, Italy, Lithuania, Croatia, and Germany, showcasing a broad geographic and creative range.
Among the feature films are notable entries such as „Back to Tomioka” (France, Poland), „Dancing Bears” (Poland), and „The Ghost of the Riverbend” (Hungary). The series and TV specials category includes „Buddy” (Slovenia), „Finding Home” (Bulgaria, France), and „Pebbi” (Czechia). Short films spotlight works like „Cucurbitaceae” (Belgium) and „Inner Glow” (Lithuania), while student shorts feature projects from Hungary, Germany, Czechia, and Bulgaria. With over half of the selected projects appealing to older audiences and the introduction of a major new award, the 2024 CEE Animation Forum promises to be a pivotal event for the animation industry in the region.
